Some America’s Got Talent auditions are remembered for spectacular vocals, unbelievable tricks or a shocking surprise.
Matt Mauser’s audition was different.
When he walked onto the AGT stage in 2021, he wasn’t simply carrying a song with him. He was carrying the memory of his late wife, Christina, and the life they had built together.
He had come to sing “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” by Phil Collins.
But as the performance unfolded, it became clear that every word meant something deeply personal to him.
Matt Mauser Had a Story He Needed to Share
Before singing, Matt told the judges that his wife Christina had died in the helicopter crash on January 26, 2020, that also killed basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and others.
Christina had been a girls’ basketball coach and was traveling to a tournament when the helicopter crashed.
Matt explained that he and Christina had both previously worked as schoolteachers before he began pursuing music full-time.
For Matt, the loss changed everything.
But instead of allowing grief to define his family, he wanted to show his children that life could continue.
That became one of the most important reasons he decided to audition for AGT.
Choosing “Against All Odds”
Matt chose Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” for his audition.
The choice was deeply personal.
In an interview after the audition, Matt explained that certain lyrics reminded him of the relationship he had shared with Christina and the feeling of losing the person who knew him better than anyone.
He wasn’t simply performing a popular song.
He was using it to say something he could no longer say to his wife in person.
And that made the performance extremely difficult.
The Performance Became Overwhelming
When Matt began singing, his children were watching nearby.
At first, he continued through the song.
But the emotion gradually became harder to contain.
By the end, Matt became visibly emotional and struggled to finish the performance.
The moment wasn’t about producing a technically perfect television performance.
It was about a husband remembering his wife and a father trying to move forward with his children.
The judges could see that.
And the room became deeply emotional.
The Judges Gave Him a Standing Ovation
After Matt finished, all four judges stood and applauded.
Howie Mandel described the emotion coming through the performance and emphasized how powerful it was to feel what Matt was experiencing.
Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara also praised the vulnerability and emotion behind his performance.
Simon Cowell then asked Matt what he hoped to get from his AGT experience.
Matt gave an answer that revealed what mattered most to him.
He wanted his children to understand that although their family had experienced tremendous grief, that grief did not have to define the rest of their lives.
He wanted them to continue finding joy and chasing their dreams.
That message became one of the most memorable parts of the audition.
“I Was Singing to Her”
After receiving four yes votes, Matt reflected on what had happened onstage.
He explained that he felt as though he had been singing directly to Christina and wanted to make her proud.
That idea gave the audition another emotional layer.
For the audience, it was an AGT performance.
For Matt, it was also a tribute.
Every note carried memories of a relationship that had been suddenly taken away.
And his children were there to witness him take another step forward.
The Audition Was Not About a Golden Buzzer
It is important to clarify one detail about this performance.
Matt Mauser did not receive a Golden Buzzer during this audition.
Instead, Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and Howie Mandel all voted yes, allowing him to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Matt later appeared in the competition again, including the Wild Card round, but he ultimately did not advance to the live-show quarterfinals.
That makes the audition especially interesting: its lasting impact came not from a Golden Buzzer or a competition victory, but from the deeply personal story behind the performance.
Why This AGT Audition Still Stands Out
Matt Mauser’s audition demonstrates why some performances remain memorable long after the competition has ended.
His voice was only part of the story.
The real power came from understanding why he was singing.
He was a widower.
He was a father.
And he was trying to show his children that even after experiencing unimaginable loss, it is still possible to keep moving forward.
That message transformed a familiar Phil Collins song into something personal.
The judges weren’t simply listening to a singer.
They were watching someone turn grief into music.
