Not every memorable America’s Got Talent audition requires a powerful voice, elaborate choreography, or a complicated stunt.
Andy Rowell proved that with one very simple idea: karaoke.
For his Season 14 audition, Rowell chose “Tequila” by The Champs, a song famous for its long instrumental sections and its instantly recognizable one-word lyric. Instead of treating the performance like a conventional singing audition, he turned the simplicity of the song into the centerpiece of his act.
A Very Unusual Song Choice
When contestants arrive on the AGT stage, viewers usually expect them to showcase a particular skill.
Rowell took a different approach.
He introduced himself as a karaoke performer and selected “Tequila.” The song, originally recorded by The Champs, is unusual because most of the track is instrumental, with the word “Tequila!” appearing as its defining vocal moment.
That gave Rowell an opportunity to build an entire performance around anticipation and timing.
Rather than filling every second with singing, he allowed the music and the audience’s expectations to do much of the work.

Four Yes Votes
The performance ultimately received four yes votes.
Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Gabrielle Union, and Julianne Hough all voted to move Rowell forward, sending him to the Judge Cuts round.
That made the audition more than just a funny stage moment—it officially advanced Rowell in the competition.
